Changing Stigma

Changing Stigma: stories

Colorado adopted the "Lift the Label" campaign to reduce the stigma of addiction, which often stops people from seeking treatment for substance use disorder (SUD). The main goal of the campaign is to share recovery stories and resources that help people conquer addiction and find long-term recovery.
What does this mean for Colorado
Our community is in desperate need of help. 1 in 10 Colorado residents ages 12+ reported having a Substance Misuse Disorder, according to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2023). Addiction can affect anyone, regardless of race, gender identity, age, geographic location, sexual orientation or income. Recovery is possible through the support of the community, and when loved ones recognize and end the shame and judgment of substance use disorders. Lawmaker senator Stacy petterson shares her story of her mothers addiction.
