The victim empathy class aims to enhance individuals' ethical decision-making by fostering a deeper understanding and development of empathy for themselves and others. The class delves into the distinctions between victim knowledge, victim sympathy, and victim empathy, explores the concept of who a victim is, recognizes the symptoms of how a victim is affected, and educates participants about core victim rights. The National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics have found that approximately 21% of students aged 12-18 experience bullying nationwide. We are excited to share that we have integrated information addressing the harmful effects of bullying and cyberbullying in response to the growing concerns faced by our youth today. In this class, students will learn specific skills and strategies to improve their behavior, break the cycle of abuse, and take responsibility by crafting a 6-component apology letter, which will be completed during class. Our experienced instructors utilize motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and social learning theory as the educational models for the class.
